What is Volume?

Volume represents the amount of trading activity recorded in a candle. It is commonly displayed as bars with one value per period.

How it works

Each candle carries its own volume value. Traders often compare current volume with a volume moving average to describe whether activity is relatively elevated or subdued.

How traders often interpret it

Higher volume during a move is often interpreted as stronger participation, while lower volume can suggest lighter participation. Neither reading guarantees continuation or reversal.

What it can be useful for

  • participation context
  • filtering breakouts
  • comparing current and average activity
  • qualifying momentum conditions

Indicators it pairs well with

VWAP

VWAP combines price location with a volume-aware reference.

MACD

Volume adds participation context to a momentum change.

Donchian

Volume can qualify activity around a channel breakout.

Using Volume in AlertoWatch

Turn the indicator relationship into a precise monitored condition. These are plain-English rule ideas, not recommendations or promises about market outcomes.

  • Alert me when volume crosses above its moving average on 1h.
  • Alert me when a Donchian breakout occurs while volume is above its average.
  • Alert me when MACD crosses bullish with above-average volume.

Limitations

Volume alone does not explain direction or intent. Elevated activity can occur during continuation, reversal, or indecision.
